Meet up

Eventful day.

Met Jade and again today for a more formal business kinda setting. Got her to review my portfolio thou abit reluctant to show wadever i have. But glad to learn a new perspective of investments. So pple, if u're interested u can go to her @Summit Planners~!

Then i met Baska in the evening. An indian fren that i have made at my workplace. Not my direct colleague, but works at our workshop and specializes in Air-con and Provi plant. I did learn some skills from him. So hes kinda considered to be my shifu~ one of the few pple around who teaches me stuff patiently without expecting anithing in return. Am touched.

I guess he felt honoured too when i stayed back on weekends to learn from him. And we chat after work and soon become frens.

His background, like any other foreign workers, is a tough one. So I guess it sorta encourages me no matter wad, theres someone who led a harder life than me. His family used to own lands in india, until his uncle persuaded his father to sell lands to go to the city area. However, his uncle cheated his dad. Buying properties using the proceeds from the land sales to put under his name. And bluffed his father that he put those properties, under his father's name.

And so when Baska's father passed away, he was only left with a small piece of land. His relatives around despised him for being poor n even ignored him totally.

His parents were divorced and went to separate cities. Until when Baska returned to his hometown, the pple spread the news and his mum came back to meet him. but not long after, his mum got a disease and passed away.

He told me abt a fortune teller who predicted all these wld happen in his life. And it did. And the parting words from the fortune teller is, he have to leave his country in order to have a better life. And so he trusted him an embarked on his journey to Singapore. He was fortunate that he came to SG as a tourist to look for a job. And so he saved on the agent fees. His previous boss was a nice person who took him in after an interview, and so he has been working here.

Life gradually turned better when his relatives introduced this Sg girl to him to marry. And he says that he has a chance of becoming a citizen of sg after getting married. So all the best to him.

Life will surely be better after becoming a citizen cos he can get a much better salary. He says that it has been his lifetime dream to settle down with a family too.

MARTECH 2010

OKay~ im back to blog about sth i've been very excited abt, these 2 days. Its a biennial Maritime Conference held at my school, SMA(Singapore Maritime Academy).

Its simply feels wonderful to be back in school, seeing all my lecturers, some have even grown younger cos he dyed his hair black... Dr Tham, used to teach me the chim chim thermodynamics with the what... enthalpy n entropy curves... And i got to noe that he's actually moved to Newcastle Uni to teach! So hopefully he can get me in, in time to come, cuz my grades arent that eligible... And our beloved Mr Nasser has decided to move to teach at Malaysia's Academy.

SO, back to the Conference, i shall just mention abt the topics i have interest in.

I am glad to noe that the presenters mainly had the Green concern abt Earth. Which is what i am really gald to noe, with the keynote speaker promoting abt the use of LNG gases to replace HFO (heavy fuel oil) thats currently burnt in ship's engines which produces gases like NOx SOx and CO2.

So a comparison graph is shown with LNG being a much cleaner fuel. However there are concerns abt the safe storage, and larger capacity tanks req. As well as safe fuel transfers. And of course the costs involved in conversion of engines.

Leading engine maker, W (sensitive to mention names). has made an applaudable effort to make its new engines to burn 2 types of fuel. And as well, it has mentioned its measures in place to reduce NOx and SOx emissions. And research is going on with 2nd stage turbochager to maximise fuel efficiency.

And there came a Singapore company E, with its revolutionised, first in the world chemical process that can remove not on NOx SOx, but CO2 as well. even when IMO(international Maritime Org) hasn't come up with restrictions on CO2. And the company has fixed up its first plant on a Aframax vessel and is a success~ and it hopes to do for more of the Major shipping names.

And finally comes the Q & A session, which is the interesting part... with people asking, why don't W and E work tgt? since W is trying hard to work on its research. And the response was, they wld try to. haha... cos there was an awkward moment as E said they had some problems trying to convince W.

I do hope that they can work tgt eventually, to make the world a greener place!

Air Conditioning

As we all noe that current air con systems uses a compressor that consumes electricity and a refrigerant that eats up the Ozone... CFC

This researcher, came up with his presentation of using a new method with the use of a compressor and refrigerant. Instead, it uses the waste heat from the engine jacket cooling water and uses it as a refrigerant after it goes thru a processer, cant rmb wad isit, cos i needa do some reading up to understand it. its called a single effect absorption, and double effect absorption. So do go google it.

And he says that this can save fuel (electricity), as well as it is a quiet process. And even eventually, the engine room can be AIR CONDITIONED!!!

Marvellous~

Another interesting company i'd like to mention is Almaco. Erm, do google it =)

Concluding my entry, I've managed to get myself a copy of conference papers! So ask me, and i may lend u~

IQ test result

Visionary Philosopher

Your IQ Score is: 131

Your mind's strengths allow you to think ahead of the game — to imagine or anticipate what should come next in just about any situation. Because you're equally skilled in the numerical and verbal universes of the brain, you can draw from multiple sources of information to come up with great ideas. The timelessness of your vision and the balance between your various skills are what make you a Visionary Philosopher.

In addition to your strengths in math and linguistics, you have a knack for matching and anticipating patterns. These skills and your uncanny ability to detect the underlying blueprint of most of life's situations add to your Visionary Philosopher mind. Two philosophers who share the same combination of skills you possess are Plato and Benedict Spinoza. Spinoza had insight into how things worked in the world. He could envision a future based on the patterns he saw in life, and used mathematical logic as a structure within which to present his philosophical arguments. With that base he was able to use logic to formulate his theories. Borrowing from his linguistic strengths he wrote eloquent texts and, therefore, was able to bring his philosophical ideas and structure to the rest of the world. His story exemplifies the talents that are present in the Visionary Philosopher intellectual type.

Whatever you decide to do in life, you've got a powerful mix of skills and insight that can be applied in a wide variety of ways. You can expand your mind to understand a situation. Your strong balance of math and verbal skills will help you explain things to others. For example, if you were on an archaeological dig and discovered an object, you could probably use your deductive powers to figure out not only what the object was but also how it was used. Given your ability to put things together, you are more than capable of inventing a life plan that is in synch with your perspective on how things were, how they are, and how they might be one day.

Happy Teachers' Day

Here's the email conversation i had with my fav poly lecturer Mr Kalyan Chatterjea aka K.C. yea he coincidently share the same name initials~

--The message starts from below--

Well... i hvn exactly finished NS.. i signed on with the navy remember? still have abt 3 n half years to go... well still trying to learn wadever i can from my work but it just seems so limited because i am posted to patrol vessel. its abt 55m long and i have to go on patrol every now and then..

Sure we have some defects, but most then are handled by contractors, but i will stay n watch how they work and all.. And so when i met up with my classmate kelvin who is sailing with maersk now, he'd always say... "So is that what u all just do?" Cos i nv really have the chance to do overhualing of engines, machineries n stuff.. so i am pretty jealous that all my other friends seem to be learning much more than me.

And i cant wait to get out to the marine world outside. but im still unsure which field shld i go to in the marine industry. i am thinking of studying naval architecture, but i am unsure of the job nature and i am afraid i cant cope with the math is it really requires alot of math. However i do dream of designing my own ship maybe? Or maybe able to invent sth new.. has been my childhood dream to be an inventor.. haha. But then again, i find myself more of a hands on person too.. so i dun really have an idea how can i evolve myself.. Oh well it will be another 3 n half yrs to think about.

Linus if u remember finished his NS and recently joined this marine company called the CUT GROUP. Which does dismantling of oil rigs and stuff. and he says its very much hands on and workshop stuff. which he says hes not exactly a workshop person, but he seems fine with his job. not liking or disliking. And he says that hes got nice colleagues who wld teach him stuff too.

Anyway, since when and why did u decide to join the malaysian academy? Isit becos SMA is not giving u enough room for progress of ur works?

Finance

this getting outta hand.

My mum just conveniently says that im spending alot? wth man i've been watching my money like a hawk. Scrimping n saving here n there. and of course the super irritating car accident that i had recently that is just further digging into my bank.

And of course my dad is out of job for some time now. It just irks me to see him still buying 4D and betting on soccer. This seriously cant go on man

what else to pay? on top of giving my dad some expenses... i still gotta pay for car loan.. which im contemplating on renting out the car to solve the problem.

Its never in my financial plan to own a car man. for now at least.

Disgusted

And i just hope that i hv enuff left to fund my first trip outta southeast asia TAIWAN in nov... i think can just barely make it. if not more shit happens.

random thoughts

Was supposed to meet wensu on wed but there's duty..  but just felt kinda lazy n tired to go out now. sigh

Nevertheless, im glad that we're still friends after so long and prolly meeting abt twice a year. Each meeting seems like a milestone of how much we've grown, and im getting to see the changes in us as time past by. its great to reminisce the good times we had in poly. thou we only manage to meet at expeditions, each was fun and looked forward to.

till the next time we meet girl...

the rubbish rumours at work is simply irritating.. with my "boss" n colleagues saying that the girl is drive to work every day is my gf. gosh. pls im just being kind for ferrying a colleague tht lives near me. thats all. kindness is my nature! ya dun puke. im just stating a fact..

and as for the girl that im currently having a crush on now, im just having a take it easy attitude on it. if nature decides the way it is, then will just follow its way. cos as for past experiences hasnt been successful and some has been painful. n well, we hadnt established much contact. so.. i'd still try to move her with simple kindness.

update

dad just submitted his resignation.

i kinda support his move cos his company management is simply "consuming" him. is that the right word? but aniwae, 4 years hes been in the spray painting company and i believe he's one of the key Generals that built up the company. overseeing and working on projects that're worth tens of thousands to multi-million projects today.

i shall not mention the name of the company. but its one of the biggest contractor that works on major projects in singapore namely, the signages in sentona, changi terminal 3, budget terminal, universities and so on... and the recent major project taken is the IR casino.

Despite having projects of this scale, the company management stubbornly refuses to expand the spray painting facilities, which poses a huge challenge to the spray painting team which is headed by my dad. without the expansion, it is little wonder that productivity is not good. As for the stand for the company is to cut cost as much as possible, the management doesnt see a need to expand.

The immediate superior of my father, who is a manager did not voice out to the management for the need to expand. and this is why my dad finds it so difficult to work. dad did mention that the company did try to source for workshop areas but met with much difficulty and negative comments n the idea became a flop.

That is why my dad quit. i believe he faces tremendous pressure from the projects that he could barely handle with his team, and more n more projects are coming up and most them due in 3 mths time.

well u may say its an irresponsible act, but i dun see it that way. cos firstly, it is a failure of the management, then although he may be seen as a small employee, but i believe hes has the right to ask for the expansion to facilitate his work. So his resignation is more of an alarm clock for his company to wake up to see his needs or rather what the company really needs on the ground.

The focus of the company is not there too, as my dad mentions that they actually employ graduates n bla bla in the administration side which is 3 times more man power than the production team. and some of these people hav no clue why they got employed there, and some left after working a few mths.

The irony and the probably the fact of other companies is that these graduates actually get paid much more than my dad. which shows how much the company or companies simply value a diploma or a degree over a ground worker or shld i say a key General in the production team. Which truly generates the earnings for the company. believe it or not, my dad makes just slightly less than 2k in basic pay.

So people, go and study for a bright future.
